Jungfraujoch: Top of Europe

Jungfraujoch also called the top of the Europe. This was the highlight of our trip to Switzerland. It lies at an elevation of 3,463 metres above sea level.

How to reach Jungfraujoch

Jungfraujoch can only be reached by train. The closest you can get by car is Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald. If you are travelling by train, both Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald are reachable by train from Interlaken Ost station. Getting to Jungfraujoch will be quicker if passing through Grindelwald.

There are a couple of options to reach Jungfraujoch. You can take the new gondola ride from Grindelwald, the Eiger express to the Eigergletscher, and then the railway to the top(the fastest option). The second option is to take the train to Kleine Scheidegg from Grindelwald and then take the train to the top. The third option is to take the train to Kleine Scheidegg from Lauterbrunnen and then take the train to the top. If you have a swiss travel pass, you’ll get discounts on the Jungfraujoch tickets.

We traveled from Lucerne to Interlaken. Along the way, there were lovely lake vistas.

We took the new Eiger express(gondola ride) from Grindelwald. Our breathtaking views from the gondola.

We could also see the train, which was another option to take.

We switched to cogwheel train at Eigergletscher. Stunning views of the mountains covered with snow.

This train also made a short stop at the station of Eismeer. You can get off the train for a few minutes to enjoy the view of eternal snow and ice through the panoramic windows.

Once you get off the station, a lift takes you 117 m further up to the Sphinx observatory. You can enjoy a 360° view here from the terrace and from the comfort of a building with panoramic windows.

You can go out in the snow and enjoy the view of the Grosser Aletsch glacier and the surrounding mountains.

You can also hike on the glacier; we saw a couple of guided tour groups.

On the way back, we got off at Kleine Scheidegg so we could take another route to go down. We were mesmerized by the beauty that we lost track of time and missed our train going down. We were pleased to spend more time here enjoying the snow-capped mountains and stunning scenery.

Visiting Jungfraujoch was not cheap but very unique and worth the money especially for first time visitors. Other options to visit in the area are Grindelwald First which includes cable way, first flyer, scooter and cart ride. Click here for more information.

You can also visit the nearby picturesque towns of Wengen, Mürren, and Lauterbrunnen.
