Top cities and towns to visit in Switzerland

Planning a trip to Switzerland? Here is the list of Switzerland cities and towns which can be included in your itinerary. All the cities are conveniently accessible by train or car.

Tip: If the weather is fine, you can visit any of the Swiss mountain peaks on your list, but if it’s gloomy or raining, you should see these cities instead.

Zurich

If you are flying in or out of Zurich, a Zurich city tour can be easily added to your itinerary. If you are coming from the airport, take the train to Zurich HBF. The city center is easily walkable from the station. Walk along the canal and can visit Fraumunster Church, Grossmunster, and Zurich Lake.

Lucerne

Lucerne, also called Luzern, is a beautiful city in Switzerland situated on the edge of the lake with a striking alpine panorama as a backdrop. It is conveniently accessible from most of the towns by train or car. The old city is situated near the central station and easily walkable to see the famous sites like Chapel Bridge and Lion monument. You can also visit Mt. Pilatus, Mt. Rigi, and Mt. Titlis by using public transportation.

Interlaken

Interlaken is a traditional resort town in central Switzerland’s mountainous Bernese Oberland region. It’s the most popular tourist town because it is the ideal base to explore the Jungfrau region. Other towns to explore in Bernese Oberland region are Grindelwald, Wengen, MürrenLauterbrunnen. You can visit them before or after your visit to Jungfraujoch. Wengen and Murren are car-free towns and can only be reached by train.

Lauterbrunnen is a Swiss Alps municipality and can easily reach from Interlaken. You can visit Jungfraujoch from here too.

Thun is a town near Lake Thun in Switzerland’s Bernese Oberland region. You can see the swiss alps from here, but it was cloudy the day we visited.

All these cities can be easily accessible by train or car. From the central station of each town, you can walk and see the highlights in 3-4 hours. If you have a swiss travel pass, it includes unlimited travel on trains, busses, and boats. It also included free access to a list of museums. You also get discounts on tickets for the swiss mountain peak.
